SUMMER ADVANTAGE USA SOCIAL ENTERPRISE WINTER INTENSIVE/ ASHOKA CHANGEMAKER CHALLENGE

Applications for this national, multi-disciplinary, case competition are due November 30.

Led by noted social entrepreneur and Ashoka fellow, Earl Martin Phalen, Summer Advantage USA is a national nonprofit that provides research-based summer learning programs to children in grades K-8. As part of its hope to create a pipeline of social entrepreneurs, the organization launched its Fellowship Program in the fall of 2009 and will extend its impact on students of all ages with the Winter Intensive. In partnership with the Ashoka Changemaker Campus Initiative, the Winter Intensive will provide selected student teams from across the country the opportunity to create an implementable solution to a real time challenge of Summer Advantage. Teams will compete to develop the best strategy to help Summer Advantage reach its goal of serving 100,000 children annually. Winners will be announced at the Ashoka Changemaker Campus Conference in February.

FLIP-IT: Opportunity to Gain Small Business Consulting Experience

When: Thursday, December 3rd, 7:00pm
Where: Old Trinity Room, West Campus

Next Session:
John Marcarelli of Dolly Mama Handmade Chocolates: a local family business that creates handmade chocolates using sustainable practices and local ingredients

Details:
Flip-It is a joint effort between the Duke Microfinance Leadership Initiative (DMLI) and the Institute for Sustainable Development (ISD). Through this opportunity, students will be able to: help local businesses tackle real-world issues, network with local leaders in the field of sustainability, explore employment and internship opportunities, and practice the development of sustainable business models. Because “sustainability” is such an all-encompassing concept, we aim to bring professional, graduate, and undergraduate level students of varying backgrounds together in order to create a robust conversation and experience.

A typical Flip-It Session comprises 4 parts:

  1. An introduction of the business/organization
  2. A presentation of the ‘sustainability challenge’
  3. A brainstorming session where students are broken into teams of different graduate disciplines
  4. A pitch-back session where we present our ideas to the organization’s representative.
