Fellow Net Impact Club Members,

We hope everyone who attended the Net Impact Conference this past weekend in Ithaca had a great time! Thanks to everyone who came out to the happy hour at the Chapter House on Friday, November 13th, to meet members from other North Carolina Net Impact chapters. It was great to see you throughout the weekend and we hope the conference was productive for you all.

This coming week will be the last week that we will be selling the Net Impact Club sweatshirts, so be sure to pick up your preordered sweatshirt in the Fox Center during lunch. Sweatshirts are $31.50 (exact change appreciated). For those of you who did not get a chance to preorder a sweatshirt, another order will be placed due to additional demand, so stop by the table in the Fox Center to place your order.

Last, there are a few important club announcements that we would like to bring your attention that are happening this week:

  1. The deadline for the Leeds School of Business Net Impact Case Competition is this Monday, November 16th. Be sure to check out the link (http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0ArYcyGvgdoNGdEFVeXphOVZFTXZONl91SjlXaGFFb3c&hl=en) if you are interested in forming a team or if you are looking for a team to join. Also, all details about other upcoming case competitions have been centralized into this Google doc (i.e., where, when, and how to sign up for each competition), so we encourage you to regularly check out the document for up-to-date information about these future competitions.

  2. If you are interested in going to this year’s Week-in-Cities Trip in Washington D.C. from December 17th-19th, come to the information session being held this Monday, November 16th, from 6:30-7:30pm, in Sauer Classroom. Learn about the different companies and panels this year’s organizers (Koji Kitazume and Chris Tessone) are working hard to set up!

  3. The Job Search Team meeting has been rescheduled this week from 4-5pm on Tuesday, November 17th in Seminar C, to avoid conflicting with the MBAA town hall. We will be debriefing about the Net Impact Conference and discussing next steps to take in your job search, so this will be a valuable session.

  4. The information sessions for the skills-based volunteering programs are offered twice this week on November 17th (6:30-7:30pm) and November 18th (2-3pm). These programs are an excellent opportunity to directly apply your business skills and educate junior high and high school students on the fundamentals of business. If you are interested in participating in one of these programs but cannot attend the information session, please email Lindsey Fishleder (lindsey.fishleder@duke.edu) to sign up.

  5. We are going to have our club’s social event this term at Alivia's (http://www.aliviasdurhambistro.com/) this Thursday, November 19th, at 8:30pm. Light appetizers will be provided. We hope to see you all there!

If you haven’t already joined our Facebook group, be sure to do so! We will be posting upcoming events and announcements on our Facebook page, so it is a great way to keep abreast of all of our club’s upcoming events and activities.

Thanks and we hope you all have a great week!

Why volunteer?

Do you want to make a different in the lives of students in the Durham community? The Net Impact skills-based volunteering programs offer business students the opportunity to utilize the business skills that they have already developed and those they are currently developing at Fuqua. It is an experience in which students can get involved in the community outside of Fuqua and can participate in an extremely rewarding and valuable activity. Fuqua Students can take a break from the stress of business school life and can spend time with elementary, middle and high school students who can truly benefit from their help. Each of the skills-based volunteering programs offers a unique and differentiated volunteering experience.

2010 CASE Summer Internship Fund (SIF)

The CASE SIF is a fund that enables students to learn about the rewards and challenges of social sector management during their summer internship without making a significant financial sacrifice. In addition, the program enables organizations that otherwise could not afford to hire MBA student interns to benefit from students’ expertise in areas such as finance, management consulting, strategic planning and marketing. In 2009, the CASE SIF enabled 22 students to receive summer funding to explore careers in the social sector! (Thank you to everyone who was involved in fundraising, and congratulations to everyone who engaged in internships in the social sector!)

Looking Forward

We want to continue to position SIF as a differentiating element for MBA students seeking careers in the social sector; therefore, our plan is to grow the fund considerably over the next few years through a larger and wider student led fundraising effort. We need your help on the CASE SIF Taskforce to ensure that we have increased funds in 2010!

During the coming months, the CASE SIF Taskforce will assist in the planning and implementation of annual events consisting of Stache Bash, Cap & Gown Rentals, and Give a Day Campaign; historically, these events have represented the bulk of the funds raised. However, this year we want to go further. Plans are underway for two new events:

1) an all you can eat sweets extravaganza (think bake sale done Fuqua style), &

2) a finals pizza and sandwich study break.

How You Can Play a Leadership Role

We would also like to ask that all Net Impact Members who are able and interested join the CASE SIF Taskforce (please complete the following Google Document if you are interested: http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AnHOsCFB9HzydDZRdTFfRVdDQTMyMmtHQlU3T2ZWQkE&hl=en).

During Fall 2, we will be reaching out with ways that you can contributed to fundraising efforts even if you are not on the CASE SIF Taskforce (for example, helping to bake treats for the sweets extravaganza, etc.). Thank you in advance for donating your time and energy! With the entire Net Impact Club behind these events, we are sure to be successful in raising money and awareness for this important cause!

Next Steps

The CASE SIF Taskforce will be led by Net Impact Finance cabinet members Paige Elisha and Alfonso Puente. During the coming weeks, we will reach out to provide more information about fundraising in Fall 2. Please reach out to either Paige (paige.elisha@fuqua.duke.edu) or Alfonso (alfonso.puente@fuqua.duke.edu) if you have any questions or fundraising suggestions.

Wishing you ordered a Net Impact hooded sweatshirt?

Don't worry, you don't have to be left out for much longer!

If we reach critical mass in demand for the hooded zip-ups, we will order more... and we have already had a lot of interest so we are almost there!  In order to gage interest, please sign up HERE if you are interested in still ordering your very own.  The sweatshirts sell for just $31.50 each.

About the design: The Duke Net Impact Club logo will be on the front of the sweatshirt and quotes related to making an impact in sustainability are on the back of the sweatshirt. We recognize that “sustainability” is a rapidly-changing term with a number of definitions. Throughout the year and with your help, the Net Impact Club is going to try to bring some clarity as to "What Sustainability Means to Us,” the Fuqua community. The design of our sweatshirts is the first step, utilizing famous quotes that resonated with the cabinet. The quotes make up the iconic, concentric rings of the Net Impact logo on the backside of the sweatshirt.
