Wishing you ordered a Net Impact Hooded Sweatshirt?

Don't worry, you don't have to be left out for much longer!

If we reach critical mass in demand for the hooded zip-ups, we will order more... and we have already had a lot of interest so we are almost there!  In order to gage interest, please sign up HERE if you are interested in still ordering your very own.  The sweatshirts sell for just $31.50 each.

About the design: The Duke Net Impact Club logo will be on the front of the sweatshirt and quotes related to making an impact in sustainability are on the back of the sweatshirt. We recognize that “sustainability” is a rapidly-changing term with a number of definitions. Throughout the year and with your help, the Net Impact Club is going to try to bring some clarity as to "What Sustainability Means to Us,” the Fuqua community. The design of our sweatshirts is the first step, utilizing famous quotes that resonated with the cabinet. The quotes make up the iconic, concentric rings of the Net Impact logo on the backside of the sweatshirt.

Information Session About Careers in the Foreign Service

When: Wednesday, Nov. 11 @ 4:00 p.m.

Where: Room 230 of the John Hope Franklin Cente

Audiance:  Most applicable to US Citizens looking for full time employment with the U.S. Foreign Service, but all welcomed to attend.

Information session given by Todd Schwartz, currently Director of the Office of Iranian Affairs at the U.S. State Department.  Todd has agreed to hold an information session about economic work in the Foreign Service at 4 p.m. Nov. 11 in Room 230 of the John Hope Franklin Center.

Todd is an Economic Officer in the Foreign Service, and has had a varied and distinguished career. Before taking on his current assignment Todd was the Counselor for Economic Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, Iraq, which followed a year in Washington as Director of the Office of Iraqi Economic Affairs. Todd joined the Foreign Service in 1987, and has had postings in Germany, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, Qatar, the Philippines, Kuwait, and Canada.

State Department economic officers work in areas as diverse as trade agreements, facilitation for U.S. businesses abroad, economic sanctions (a big one at the moment for Iran), energy, aviation and the environment. I have noticed that many Duke students are interested in careers with the State Department. Todd's session would be of particular interest to business and environment students, as well as those with an economics background. As many of your know, the State Department has more than doubled its hiring of Foreign Service Officers, so this is a great time to look into it as a career.

Students can RSVP to stephen.kelly@duke.edu.

A Day in a (Un)Sustainable Life

When: November 15, 2009

Be a part of A Day in a (Un)Sustainable Life, an exciting research and policy project developed by University of St. Thomas marketing professor David Alexander.  To make the project a success, we invite our Net Impact chapter members and your local community to participate on November 15th.

Details: This project studies differences in perceptions of sustainable consumption practices around the world by asking participants to wander into their community on November 15th to take photographs of the best and worst in sustainability where they live. As they compose those photographs, participants capture the thoughts and feelings they're experiencing in a journal. When they're done, participants share their thoughts and photographs with the project. The University of St. Thomas' Net Impact chapter is taking a leadership role in carrying the project forward as an annual event that documents differences in sustainable consumption around the world and tracks changes in practices and perceptions over time.

A Day in a (Un)Sustainable Life offers the opportunity to be part of a research project that develops valuable new insights about the adoption of sustainable consumption in a multi-cultural, global environment that will influence policy makers around the world.

Participating is fun and easy and involves as much or as little time as one wishes. And you don't need to be a professional photographer to make a major contribution to the project. We've attached a short PDF brochure that you can distribute with the invitations you send out. The brochure provides specific instructions to participants on how to capture their images, thoughts, and feelings and how to then share what they've captured with us via the photo-sharing website Flikr.com or email.

if you have any questions, contact the project team (ADayInSustainability@yahoo.com)

2010 CASE Summer Internship Fund (SIF)

The CASE SIF is a fund that enables students to learn about the rewards and challenges of social sector management during their summer internship without making a significant financial sacrifice. In addition, the program enables organizations that otherwise could not afford to hire MBA student interns to benefit from students’ expertise in areas such as finance, management consulting, strategic planning and marketing. In 2009, the CASE SIF enabled 22 students to receive summer funding to explore careers in the social sector! (Thank you to everyone who was involved in fundraising, and congratulations to everyone who engaged in internships in the social sector!)

Looking Forward

We want to continue to position SIF as a differentiating element for MBA students seeking careers in the social sector; therefore, our plan is to grow the fund considerably over the next few years through a larger and wider student led fundraising effort. We need your help on the CASE SIF Taskforce to ensure that we have increased funds in 2010!

During the coming months, the CASE SIF Taskforce will assist in the planning and implementation of annual events consisting of Stache Bash, Cap & Gown Rentals, and Give a Day Campaign; historically, these events have represented the bulk of the funds raised. However, this year we want to go further. Plans are underway for two new events:

1) an all you can eat sweets extravaganza (think bake sale done Fuqua style), &

2) a finals pizza and sandwich study break.

How You Can Play a Leadership Role

We would also like to ask that all Net Impact Members who are able and interested join the CASE SIF Taskforce (please complete the following Google Document if you are interested: http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AnHOsCFB9HzydDZRdTFfRVdDQTMyMmtHQlU3T2ZWQkE&hl=en).

During Fall 2, we will be reaching out with ways that you can contributed to fundraising efforts even if you are not on the CASE SIF Taskforce (for example, helping to bake treats for the sweets extravaganza, etc.). Thank you in advance for donating your time and energy! With the entire Net Impact Club behind these events, we are sure to be successful in raising money and awareness for this important cause!

Next Steps

The CASE SIF Taskforce will be led by Net Impact Finance cabinet members Paige Elisha and Alfonso Puente. During the coming weeks, we will reach out to provide more information about fundraising in Fall 2. Please reach out to either Paige (paige.elisha@fuqua.duke.edu) or Alfonso (alfonso.puente@fuqua.duke.edu) if you have any questions or fundraising suggestions.
