Day in Durham - Imagine Your Impact!

2009 Duke MBA Day in Durham: Saturday, August 22nd

Every year, CASE and the Duke MBA Net Impact Club organize an event to introduce Fuqua students to the Durham community. The goal of the event is to whet the students’ appetites for getting involved in the Durham community during their two years at Fuqua, for seeing first hand the relevance of their MBA training and skills when tackling social problems, and for embarking upon careers in business with an understanding of and commitment to responsible business and community leadership. Day in Durham is now in its 6th year.

Overview:

You will arrive at Fuqua, pick up your limited edition Day in Durham t-shirt and be treated to an inspiring keynote speech by Burt's Bees CEO, John Replogle. We are also hoping to provide you with lunch at this time.

After the keynote, participants will depart from Fuqua by bus on one of five excursions to various locations throughout Durham for tours and panel discussions with local business and community leaders.  Panelists will present their thoughts about issues and opportunities in the Durham community as well as reflections about how to make an impact in that issue area using one's career.

This year's Day in Durham event will offer five distinct excursions, including:

  • Social Enterprise

  • Economic Development / Urban Revitalization

  • Sustainability Development

  • Health

When you register, you will rank the excursions according to your interest. There are limited spaces for each excursion, so we encourage you to register early to secure your spot. Excursion Details for 2009:

Excursion A – Social Enterprise in Action: TROSA, Inc.

Enjoy a fascinating visit to the campus of Triangle Residential Options for Substance Abusers, Inc. (TROSA), an entrepreneurial nonprofit that helps recovering drug and alcohol abusers to change their lives through involvement in an ever expanding portfolio of earned income ventures. TROSA ventures include a moving company, landscaping, catering, home repairs, frame shop, storage, janitorial services, online auctions, etc. The tour will be guided by the COO and Fuqua ‘99, Keith Artin.

This excursion is recommended for students interested in making an impact through leadership in Entrepreneurship and Economic Development.

Excursion B - Revitalizing Downtown Durham

Durham has undergone a radical revitalization in the past few years – one that continues today, as former tobacco warehouses become home to chic apartments and condominiums, shopping centers, restaurants, and cutting-edge office and lab space. Join leaders from some of the firms responsible for designing, financing, building, and contributing to Durham’s renaissance for a panel at the Lewis & Clark Development building, a beautifully renovated building that is now a small business incubator.

This excursion is recommended for students interested in making an impact through leadership in entering the fields of Real Estate, Finance, Entrepreneurship and Economic Development.

Excursion C -Sustainable Development and a Bright Environmental Future

Sustainability is becoming more and more a part of our daily lives - whether it's companies like Wal-Mart and Coca-Cola talking about greening their supply chains and using green materials or the Obama Administration talking about providing training in green jobs. In order to be an effective leader of consequence, you need to be equipped to participate in the sustainability dialogue and Durham is the perfect place to jump right in. Join Chris Carmody of the Institute for Sustainable Development for a panel with some of the area’s leaders in sustainability as they discuss energy, trade, community development and the role of government, and highlight innovations in the field.

This excursion is recommended for students interested in making an impact through leadership in Energy, Sustainability, Fair Trade, Local Government, and Community Development.

Excursion D – Leading and Making an Impact through Educating Youth

With the “Race to the Top” Fund now available and increased attention placed on innovative models to close the achievement gap, business leaders are becoming more and more a part of education reform. Visit the Emily K. Center to see how the Krzyzewski family has sought to make a difference in Durham. Stay for a conversation moderated by David Stein of the Duke Office of Community Affairs, an office that aims to support local neighborhoods and boost achievement in local schools. The panel includes local nonprofit and charter school leaders and will touch on the challenges and successes of working in education and what Arne Duncan’s call to implement innovation and communities of learning means locally.

This excursion is recommended for students interested in making an impact through leadership in Education, Youth Development, The Relationship Between Government and Business and Entrepreneurship.

Excursion E – Building Healthy Communities

The current debate on Health Care reform is in full swing. What will be the future of insurance? What will doctor-patient care look like? Should companies like Walgreens start providing full health services? What roll should technology play in this space – should there be an App that carries your complete medical history? Just a few blocks from Duke University is Lyon Park, a unique “social services mall” that responds to the needs of disadvantaged residents in, among other areas, health care. We will tour the community health clinic at Lyon Park and then gain a broader perspective on the different opportunities and challenges of health care during a panel discussion. Join in on the discussion with a panel composed of leaders from a Ronald McDonald House, a Duke-sponsored community health outreach program and other organizations in the field.

This excursion is recommended for students interested in making an impact through leadership in Health Care and the Relationship Between Government and Business.

John Replogle joined Burt's Bees in 2006 to oversee all our activities and set the tone and direction for everything we do. He came to us from Unilever, where he ran the skin care division and helped to launch the Real Beauty campaign for Dove and establish the Dove Self-Esteem Fund for young girls.

He came to us from Unilever, where he ran the skin care division and helped to launch the Real Beauty campaign for Dove and establish the Dove Self-Esteem Fund for young girls.

John's love for our products and his family both played a role in his decision to come on board. He has four daughters and says "Raising their awareness to environmental and natural product consciousness provides a very tangible benefit in my life. I just feel like this is a place where I can be my best, do great work and do some good in the process."

Some of that good includes developing our ECOBEES program at work. This group of volunteers helps develop company-wide initiatives that both educate employees and the community about sustainability goals and implement them. John says, "The company's mission and my personal mission are beautifully aligned. I'm proud of what we've achieved and keen to move forward to do even more — to fulfill our potential and to be a company that helps define the evolving relationship between business and community."

John earned a B.A. in History from Dartmouth College and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School. His upbringing in New England gave him a great appreciation for the ocean and mountains and helped him to become an avid outdoorsman. Put him on a bike, in a canoe or on a hiking trail and he couldn't be happier.

John's favorite Burt's Bees products: Herbal Deodorant, Shea Butter Hand Repair Creme (especially in winter) and Lemon Butter Cuticle Creme.
